Your credit report in Ghana: how to request it, read it and correct errors

Learn how a small unpaid loan can affect future borrowing, request your annual free report, check the details and dispute mistakes.

Beginner 14 minutes MINT Explains Updated 10 October 2026

Read at your own pace. A video for this lesson is on the way.

Before we begin

That GHS 500 loan you ignored could matter when you later apply for GHS 50,000. The amount may be small, but a record of how you handled repayment can help a lender assess a new application.

This does not mean one late payment automatically prevents all future borrowing. It means your history deserves attention before you need another loan.

By the end, you should be able to:

  • Explain the difference between a credit report and a credit score.
  • Understand the retention rule for paid-off and outstanding facilities.
  • Request your annual free report.
  • Check a report against your own records.
  • Raise a specific, evidence-backed dispute.

We use fictional Ghanaian examples. Rules and links were checked on 10 October 2026.

Step 1: understand what a credit report records

Think of a credit report as a record of credit information associated with you. It can include your identifying details, borrowing facilities, amounts owed, repayment history and account status.

It is not simply a list of people who have failed to repay. Records of credit that you handled properly can also matter.

Term Plain meaning What to check
Credit facility A loan or another arrangement that provides credit Do you recognise the lender and account?
Outstanding balance The amount still reported as owed Does it agree with your records and the reporting date?
Arrears Payments overdue under the agreement Were payments missed, late or recorded incorrectly?
Closed facility An account recorded as closed Was the account fully settled and correctly closed?
Credit score A numerical assessment derived from information and a scoring model What does this bureau's score mean?

The report contains the underlying information; a score summarises risk using a model. Do not assume every bureau uses the same scale, or that a particular number guarantees approval.

A lender may also consider income, existing commitments, affordability and any required security. A credit report is one part of the decision.

Step 2: remember that credit goes beyond bank loans

Ghana's credit-reporting framework includes banks and other financial institutions and extends to designated providers such as fintechs and mobile-money operators. Do not assume a digital borrowing arrangement is invisible because there was no bank branch or paper form. Bank of Ghana participation notice

This does not mean every ordinary MoMo transfer is a loan, or that every provider submits identical information. Check the lender named in your credit agreement and request your actual report.

Classroom example: Kojo's two loan applications

Kojo, a fictional mechanic in Kumasi, takes a GHS 500 digital loan. He misses repayment and leaves it unresolved.

Later, he wants GHS 50,000 for equipment. The new lender reviews his application and credit history. An unresolved earlier balance could raise questions about his repayment behaviour, even though the new loan is much larger.

The sensible response is to establish what is owed, address the earlier facility and verify the record. Deleting the loan app does not settle the debt.

Pause and think: if Kojo pays the earlier loan today, should he assume that every record of it disappears tomorrow? The next step explains why the answer is no.

Step 3: understand the six-year rule correctly

Bank of Ghana's 2026 notice distinguishes two situations:

Situation Retention treatment described in the notice
Fully paid-off facility that is fully closed History must not be retained beyond six years from full closure
Facility still outstanding after maturity It is not deleted until full repayment

Lenders must continue reporting until full closure, including written-off facilities still in collection. A write-off is not necessarily debt forgiveness. Bank of Ghana retention notice

Worked timeline

Suppose a fictional loan was taken in 2022, fully repaid and fully closed on 10 October 2026.

The six-year reference point is 10 October 2026, not the original borrowing date. Six years from that date is 10 October 2032. Under the notice, its paid-off history should not remain beyond that period.

This is a retention limit, not a promise that the entry disappears immediately after payment. Its status should accurately reflect settlement and closure.

If the loan remains unpaid, do not apply the paid-off timeline as if it cancels the debt.

Step 4: choose a licensed bureau

Bank of Ghana's directory currently lists:

  • XDS Data Ghana
  • Dun and Bradstreet Credit Bureau Limited
  • MyCredit Score Limited

Use the Bank of Ghana directory to check the current listing and official contact details before sharing identification documents.

Ask the bureau what information its report covers. If a lender's information differs from yours, ask which bureau and reporting date were used rather than assuming every report is identical.

Step 5: ask for your annual free report

The Credit Reporting Regulations, 2020 provide for a report at no cost once a year, subject to establishing your identity to the bureau's satisfaction. They require provision within two working days after receipt of the request. Complete the verification requirements and retain evidence of when your request was received. Credit Reporting Regulations, L.I. 2394

Working days are not the same as elapsed calendar days. Ask the bureau to confirm receipt and whether it needs anything else from you.

A useful request is:

I would like my annual free credit report. Please confirm the correct request route, identity-verification requirements and expected delivery date. I am not requesting a recurring paid report service.

The free annual report should be distinguished from additional reports, subscriptions or other optional services. Confirm the cost of any separate service before accepting it.

Step 6: follow the XDS request process carefully

XDS is one example; you can use another licensed bureau. Start from the official XDS Credit Report Request page.

The supplied screenshot shows an individual request form, personal and identity fields, contact details, standing-report payment options, consent and a signature area. It also describes an identity-verification step after submission. The online version may differ, including how it requests a valid ID.

A practical sequence

  1. Choose Individual for your own personal report.
  2. Enter your name and identifying details accurately.
  3. Follow the current ID instructions, including an upload or secure verification step where requested.
  4. Provide current contact details so the bureau can respond.
  5. Confirm whether the report is for you or is to be sent to an institution.
  6. Clarify the annual free-report route before selecting payment or recurring-delivery options.
  7. Read the declaration and consent, sign where required, and submit.
  8. Keep the reference and complete any official follow-up verification.

The screenshot and public form include payment or standing-report options. Do not assume choosing “Yearly” purchases the same thing as requesting your statutory annual free copy. If the form requires a paid plan with no clear free option, contact XDS using its official details first.

Supplied form example. Current fields and verification steps may change.

Send identity documents only through a verified bureau channel. Do not post your Ghana Card or completed credit report publicly, and never give an agent your MoMo PIN or one-time code.

Step 7: read your report line by line

Have your loan agreements, statements, payment receipts and settlement confirmations beside you.

Check Question to ask Useful evidence
Identity Are the name and ID details mine? Your identification records
Lender and account Do I recognise this facility? Agreement and account reference
Original borrowing Does the reported amount make sense? Disbursement record
Balance Does the amount owed match the relevant date? Lender statement
Repayments Are payments and arrears recorded correctly? Dated receipts and statements
Settlement and closure Is a paid-off loan correctly recorded? Settlement or closure confirmation
Reporting date Could a recent event still need an update? Payment date and lender acknowledgement

A difference is a reason to investigate, not proof on its own that the bureau acted wrongly. Check the reporting date and whether the amount includes legitimate interest or charges under your agreement.

Practice: Ama spots a mismatch

Ama in Tema has a receipt for her final GHS 700 payment and a lender letter confirming full settlement. Her report still shows GHS 700 outstanding.

What should she do before applying for a car loan?

Show the worked answer

Compare the report date with the payment and settlement dates. Identify the account, then ask the lender and bureau to investigate the balance and update the record as appropriate.

Attach the receipt and settlement letter through the verified complaint channel. Keep the reference and request written confirmation of the outcome.

Ama should seek an accurate settled record, not assume every past payment entry must be erased.

Step 8: dispute an error with evidence

The regulations provide for complaints about inaccurate information and investigation by the bureau in consultation with the information provider. They also allow a written complaint to Bank of Ghana. The two-day report-delivery provision is separate from dispute handling. Credit Reporting Regulations

A practical dispute should identify:

  1. The report date and reference.
  2. The lender and affected account.
  3. The exact entry you believe is wrong.
  4. Why you believe it is wrong.
  5. The supporting records.
  6. The correction you are requesting.

You can write:

I dispute the outstanding balance on account __ in my report dated __. It shows __, but my attached records show __. Please investigate with the provider, correct the information where appropriate, and give me a complaint reference and written outcome.

If you do not recognise a loan at all, say so clearly and contact both the bureau and the named lender through verified channels. Ask for an investigation instead of paying an unfamiliar demand merely to make it disappear.

Follow up with your reference. If the matter remains unresolved, use the official complaint route and consider escalating in writing to Bank of Ghana with the correspondence.

Disputing accurate information does not make it inaccurate. Be wary of anyone promising to erase legitimate history for a fee.

Step 9: protect your record going forward

  • Borrow only after checking the total repayment and your budget.
  • Record due dates and set reminders.
  • Keep payment confirmations.
  • Contact the lender early if you expect difficulty; ask about available arrangements and get any agreement in writing.
  • After final payment, request settlement and closure confirmation.
  • Recheck the record before a major application.

Paying a loan improves its factual status; it does not guarantee an immediate score increase or a new approval. Avoid taking unnecessary debt simply to try to manufacture a better record.

Use the budget lesson to assess what you can afford before accepting another commitment.

Your action this week

Choose a licensed bureau and ask for the annual free-report process. When the report arrives, check identity, facilities, balances, payments and closure status.

If you find a mismatch, prepare one clear dispute with supporting documents. If everything is correct, keep the report securely and continue monitoring your repayment obligations.

Your credit history is easier to manage when you know what it says before a lender asks.

Check your understanding

Choose an answer to see why it works or what to reconsider. You can try every answer. Nothing is scored or saved.

1. Kojo left a GHS 500 loan unpaid and now wants GHS 50,000. What is the accurate lesson?
Small loans can never affect bigger applications
Not quite. The size of the earlier loan does not make its repayment history irrelevant.
His history may affect the decision, alongside other lending checks
Correct. Correct. The example illustrates a possible effect, not a guaranteed approval or rejection.
Every lender must automatically reject him
Not quite. A lender considers its criteria and the application; the example is not an automatic rejection rule.
2. A paid-off facility was fully closed on 10 October 2026. What date anchors the six-year retention period?
The date it was fully closed
Correct. Correct. The Bank of Ghana notice uses full closure as the reference date for a fully paid-off facility.
The date the app was deleted
Not quite. Deleting an app does not close a loan or remove a credit record.
The date the loan was first taken
Not quite. The borrowing date is not the reference date specified in the notice.
3. A loan remains outstanding after maturity. Can the borrower assume it disappears after six years?
Yes, all debts automatically disappear
Not quite. The rule for paid-off, fully closed facilities is not an expiry date for an unpaid debt.
Yes, if the phone number changes
Not quite. Changing a phone number does not settle the loan.
No, the notice says it is not deleted while outstanding until full repayment
Correct. Correct. Do not confuse credit-report retention with cancellation of a debt.
4. The XDS form shows recurring report and payment options. You want your annual free report. What should you do?
Select a paid plan without checking
Not quite. A paid recurring service is not automatically the right route for your annual free report.
Ask XDS for the annual free-report route and confirm any separate service charges
Correct. Correct. Clarify the route before accepting a payment plan.
Assume the free-report entitlement no longer exists
Not quite. Payment options on a website do not by themselves remove the entitlement.
5. Your report shows a loan you believe you fully repaid as still owing. What is the best first step?
Pay someone to erase the whole report
Not quite. An erasure promise is not a substitute for correcting the record through the proper process.
Ignore it until your next loan is rejected
Not quite. Act early so there is time to investigate before an application.
Dispute the specific entry with repayment evidence and contact the lender
Correct. Correct. Identify the account, explain the discrepancy, attach evidence and keep the complaint reference.
6. Does the two-working-day report provision mean an error dispute must also be resolved within two days?
No, report delivery and dispute handling are separate processes
Correct. Correct. The two-day provision concerns providing a requested report; disputes have separate rules.
Yes, they are the same request
Not quite. Obtaining a report and investigating disputed information are different tasks.
Yes, and a lender must then approve a loan
Not quite. Neither requesting a report nor correcting it guarantees lending approval.
